District One

View District One: A Work in Progress in a larger map

DOWNTOWN

I have worked to encourage high-quality development downtown by working for a new Travel Demand Ordinance that requires developers to plan for reductoin of single-occupant vehicles, and requiring that developers who recieve tax breaks to “build green” and be certified as LEED Silver.

Arts District: I worked to pass the Congress Street Historic District and supported the establishment of a new tax-increment financing district to finance a creative economy that thrives in the Arts District.  I am also co-chairing a citizen advisory committee to plan for the revitalization of Congress Square.

Old Port: I worked to promote nightlife policies that embrace embrace this one-of-a-kind destination.  I have also worked to revoke the liquor licenses of those establishments that threaten public safety, those exceptions that prove the rule of a well-managed nightlife economy we are lucky to have here.

Bayside: I worked to encourage residential development and discourage excessive parking in Bayside as well as  other neighborhood improvement efforts such as the construction of the new Bayside Trail, paving the first sidewalks on Franklin Arterial, and working toward a Business Improvement District.

EAST END

I worked to stop city plans to widen Franklin Arterial and further ostracize the East End.  Working closely with several neighborhood interest, I have initiated a new citizen planning effort to redesign Franklin Arterial into a great urban street that reunites the East End with the rest of Portland.

Munjoy Hill: I have worked to expand trail connections at both Fort Sumner Park and Fort Allen Park, expanded the North Street Community Garden and the play space at the East End Community School, and enabled a citizen process for planning for the redevelopment of the former Marada Adams School.

East Bayside: I  invested in streets, sidewalks, trails, and playgrounds in this long-overlooked district.  I also enlisted graduate students from the Muskie School to work with the neighborhood association on land use planning  and targeted infrastructure  investment in the East Bayside Neighborhood Plan.

India Street: I invested in the restoration of the historic Abyssinin Meeting House on Newbury Street, worked to clean up neglected properties, introduced a new carsharing program to Commercial Street, and delivered on my pledge to involve the public in decisions about the future of the Maine State Pier.

CASCO BAY ISLANDS

I worked to introduce permanent islander permit parking on Thames Street.  As a Director at Casco Bay Island Transit District, I have advocated for rates that support commuters: with deep discounts for monthly and annual passes and eliminating the bicycle penalty for islanders.

Peaks Island: I worked closely with the Peaks Island Council to promote development of permanently affordable ownership housing for working islanders, support establishment of an island taxi service, test wind speeds for future power generation, and create a community garden at Trott-Littlejohn Park.

Cliff Island: I worked closely with the Cliff Island Association to construct both a new barge landing and a new  passenger shed at the ferry landing.   As a Director of the Casco Bay Island Transit District, I have advocated that ferry ticket prices for Cliff Island come into line with those for Cheabeague Island.

GDI: I worked with the Diamonand Cove Homeowners Association and Diamond Island Association to reach a working compromise on zoning associated with the development of the Inn at Diamond Cove. At Casco Bay Lines, I have advocated forferry ticket prices to GDI coming into line with those to Peaks.
